Why Clinton Lost: Fresh Prince of Bel-Air

Sun Jun 08, 2008 at 08:54:56 PM PDT

Since the theme of the day has been examining the reasons for Clinton's loss, I would like to direct your attention to a gem of a pop-culture-fossil from the early 90's.

I haven't really watched any television since I was a pre-adolescent, but back then, I thought nothing was cooler than Will Smith's first acting gig, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Yes, I can still recite the rap-intro from memory. So when Bill Clinton was reliably self-destructing every few weeks during this campaign, it's no surprise that I recalled this episode:

My Months-Late Review of "I Am Legend" (spoilers!)

Thu Apr 24, 2008 at 07:11:37 PM PDT

NOTE: This review is rated "R" for liberal ideation, full-frontal hope-mongering and cannibalism. Keep little Julie and Johnny Kossack off this post! Spoilers inside.

The original of this movie was called "The Omega Man." It starred Charlton Heston, and it is better. Here's the imdb website for that 1971 movie. If you liked "I Am Legend," you should rent "The Omega Man." Plus, for the conservative lurkers on this board, you can rent the older movie, get drunk, shoot your guns at the neighbor's trailer and watch Charlton Heston -- while making fun of zombies and hippies. Yee haw!

Will Smith and the Curse of Scientology

Thu Dec 27, 2007 at 01:49:30 PM PDT

You really need to select your homies with care, even if you're Hollywood royalty like Will Smith. In Compton, there are bad guys on the streets, looking to draw a young innocent into their world of gangs and drugs. In Hollywood, they dress better and hang out in hot spots rather than street corners.

There's little difference in motive. There are people who want what you've got, and if given a chance, they'll take it. Right down to your life, your sanity, your career, and your last nickel.

I am Legend at Magic Johnson's theater

Mon Dec 17, 2007 at 07:13:46 PM PDT

I often think the top grossing movies and especially those that break records tell us something.

We are told everyone buys Will Smith.  And science fiction movies are the top money makers.  This is Will's third.

What I saw and felt below the fold.  I found this movie genuinely frightening--what I least expected.

I feel everyone knows the story it is only the perception that changes and therefore this could be considered a spoiler.

Obama vs. the flesh-eating zombies from New York

Sun Dec 16, 2007 at 04:58:36 PM PDT

Once there was a man. The last man on earth (for all he knew). Obama. The Omega Man. Or rather, the Obama Man.

And he had to face ZOMBIES. Morlocks come through the Time Machine, from a decadent, vanished administration civilization: zombies screaming bloodcurdling insults like "You wanted to run for President in KINDERGARTEN!" Filthy-nailed zombies who wanted to force people to pay money to health insurance conglomerates--or have their wages garnished, or not be able to work! Skeezy, tattered zombies--from New York, by the way--who thought Obama Man didn't have enough experience in killing zombies...but then how did he kill so MANY??!

    WHAT'LL HAPPEN?
--Just wait until January 3 and find out! Coming to a snow-filled and corn-fed Midwestern theater near you!!

Art imitating life imitating art...

Tue Sep 19, 2006 at 12:01:13 AM PDT

When the NSA wiretapping story broke, I couldn't believe the naivete of the news networks. Hadn't they see "Enemy of the State," the exciting sequal to the seminal Francis Ford Copella, "The Conversation," where Gene Hackman played a NSA wiretapping and surveilance specialist who freaked out when he discovered his work had led to people's deaths.

In the sequal, in which Hackman appears as the original charater years later, Will Smith becomes an accidental, unknowing witness to the NSA murder of a politician who opposes their agenda. The NSA mounts a frantic effort to capture Smith's character to kill him and anyone else who might know about the murder. They pursue him using a startling array of fantastic technological goodies such as body-bugs, live satalite images and wire-frame models of buildings and the ability to tap into security cameras and telephones in real time. They appear to have unlimited access to all communications technology and unlimited power of life and death (and credit - they have his credit cards all cancelled) over American citizens.

Poll

Will this tactic to sell a movie also inform people that would not otherwise understand what the NSA wiretapping issue is all about?
